For the second consecutive year at our new Baton Rouge location, Sunshine proudly welcomed students from Louisiana 4-H University Clover College for an immersive, hands-on experience in the world of agriculture.
The future of agriculture depends on educating and inspiring the next generation, and there is no better way to do that than by putting young people directly in front of the equipment, technology, and careers that keep our industry moving forward.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Throughout the program, students rotated through interactive stations designed to introduce them to real-world careers in agriculture and equipment dealerships. Rather than simply hearing about the industry, they had the opportunity to experience it firsthand.
Electrical Systems and Diagnostics
One of the most engaging stations focused on electrical systems. Students learned the basics of electrical boards, wiring, switches, relays, and troubleshooting techniques used by today’s equipment technicians.
As agricultural equipment continues to become more advanced, understanding electrical systems has become just as important as mechanical knowledge. Students were able to see how technicians diagnose problems and keep modern machines operating efficiently.
Building Small Engine Skills
Students also spent time learning about small engines, the foundation for many careers in equipment service.
They explored:
- Basic engine components
- Four-cycle engine operation
- Preventative maintenance
- Common troubleshooting techniques
- Safe shop practices
These hands-on lessons helped demonstrate the importance of maintenance while showing students how mechanical systems work together.
Getting Behind the Controls
Few experiences generate more excitement than climbing into a piece of equipment.
Students learned:
- Basic equipment operation
- Machine safety
- Daily inspections
- Operator responsibilities
- How technology improves efficiency on today’s farms and jobsites
From compact equipment to larger agricultural machines, students gained a better understanding of how these machines help farmers, landscapers, construction crews, and property owners accomplish more every day.
Exploring Careers in Agriculture
One of the biggest takeaways from the event wasn’t just learning about equipment, it was learning about careers.
Students discovered opportunities in:
- Equipment service and repair
- Precision agriculture technology
- Parts operations
- Sales
- Customer support
- Dealership management
Today’s agriculture industry offers careers that combine technology, problem-solving, customer service, engineering, and innovation. Programs like Clover College help students see that there are countless paths to success within agriculture.
